Red Adept Editing

You’ve worked on content editing with Alyssa. What did you enjoy most about working with her?
Alyssa has edited four books for me now, and I plan to continue working with her (as long as she’s happy to keep working with me!). Her feedback is very consistent and presented in a format that is easy for me to understand and translate into realistic changes in my stories. I’ve learned so much from her. I only wish I’d found her sooner! I also recently worked with Jessica and Kim on a short story I wrote that was published in a sci-fi anthology. Their feedback was also immensely helpful!

What made you choose Red Adept Editing?
RAE was recommended by Patty Jansen. Before sending my books, it was nice to know that RAE was an editing service I could trust.

What inspired you to start a writing career?
My grandmother inspired me to write. She was a journalist, and we wrote letters to one another while I was growing up. She always said my letters made her feel like I was sitting right beside her. She encouraged me from a young age to pursue writing, and it was her encouragement and prodding that led to my writing career.

Do you have a favorite place or time of day to write?
Ha! I wish. I have young kids, so I write when I can. Whether that is in the morning when they’re playing, or during the days they’re at preschool, or at night when the house is quiet. It varies. I sneak in time whenever I can. Sometimes, it’s only fifteen minutes, so then it’s a sprint to see how many words I can type on the page or how many pages I can edit. The rare days I’m awarded a few undisturbed hours to write is a true luxury!

Do you like to plan before you write? Or do you prefer to start and see where the story goes?
When I first started writing many years ago, I was a total pantser. I’d be inspired to write a story, so I’d sit down and start writing . . . and inevitably get stuck. Now, I’m a fluid outliner (if that’s a term!) with plans to become a more firm outliner. When I begin a novel now (partly thanks to what I’ve learned from Alyssa), I write clear goals and make sure to have the conflict outlined in my plot so the story keeps flowing. I’ve found I’m able to write faster and have a more solid first draft with this process.

You’ve lived in a lot of different places. Which has been your favorite?
New Zealand. I lived there for five years and loved it. Some of my best friends still live down under, which is hard since we rarely see each other. I love to travel and meet people from other cultures. I spent most of my twenties traveling around the US and the world. It’s been great since, as a writer, I’m able to call upon actual experiences I’ve had to make my stories richer.

You have some great covers. Who does your cover work?
Deranged Doctor Design. They’re professional and very dependable!

What’s your favorite tea?
English Breakfast. Tea drinking was a habit I picked up while living in NZ.

What’s the best writing advice you’ve ever been given?
Write every day. As a new writer, that was hard to do. Now, I can’t imagine a day going by where I don’t write or edit something.
