What made you choose Red Adept Editing?

I’d used Red Adept before and found them very efficient, well organized and accommodating, especially when I moved the goal posts a few times!

You’ve worked with Kelly Reed. What did you enjoy most about working with him?

Kelly got me up a very steep learning curve and was extremely patient with me, taking the time to explain things and do a lot of hand holding. He also went above and beyond what he was asked to do, which is always impressive.

What inspired you to start a writing career?

I used to be a copywriter, coming up with ideas for ads and writing text for brochures, but I got a bit disillusioned with it, as clients aren’t willing to take chances or do anything original. With writing, I now have the freedom to do what I like, within reason of course.

Do you have a favorite place or time of day to write?

Mornings, definitely. That’s my most productive time. Then as the day wears on, I start to flag.

Do you like to plan before you write? Or do you prefer to start and see where the story goes?

I write thrillers, so each one has to be planned to within an inch of its life. I couldn’t write any other way, or it would all get very messy, very quickly. Planning stops you getting tied in knots later on.

What part of self-publishing do you enjoy the most?

The freedom.

What is your favorite Nintendo game?

I play Fast RMX with my son. He always beats me.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

Surfing. That’s when the conditions allow. Where I live, the waves are not very consistent. Otherwise, I’d get nothing done. I’m obsessed with surfing, always have been. And, yes, I still think about writing when I’m in the surf—usually feeling guilty that I’m not sitting in front of my laptop!

What’s the best writing advice you’ve ever been given?

Don’t make your main character passive.

My new thriller Savage Lies comes out on June 7th.

The most dangerous man in the world is the one with nothing to live for.

John Savage keeps hearing a voice in his head telling him to end it all. It’s surprising he doesn’t hear more voices, considering the hundreds of people he’s killed in the name of democracy. That changes when a girl disappears. The police think she’s the victim of a serial killer, but John has another theory—one that turns out to be far more terrifying.

Savage Lies is a fast-paced action thriller for fans of Lee Child and David Baldacci.
